Santa's Hideaway Hollow Event - GALLO Gives Back
Posted by Valerie Hurst on Fri, Oct 28, 2011
Santa’s Hideaway Hollow is a non-profit organization that is a true hidden gem in Northeast Ohio. It is a magical place that surrounds terminally ill children and their families with comfort and the spirit of Christmas complete with elves, reindeer, and of course – Santa.
But a 93-acre farm with over a dozen buildings filled with vintage Christmas décor, trinkets, trains, and a barn filled with reindeer and draft horses is not easy to maintain alone. Santa depends on many volunteers to keep the Middlefield branch of the North Pole clean, upkept, and the Hideaway growing. From Santa’s workshop, to the barber shop, post office, and bank – where a child can bank a heartfelt wish, Santa’s Hideaway Hollow is a place where families can enjoy the spirit of Christmas when needed. Plans for a helipad to be built on the property for those children who cannot be driven in are underway, and train that is large enough for well enough children to ride is another project being planned.
A few members of the GALLO team were fortunate enough to volunteer time at the Hideaway last week to help insulate and panel the inside of the new Bait & Tackle Shop. I think we spent and equal amount of time shuffling tools and ladders around the inside of the building as we spent stapling insulation into all the walls and ceiling on that cold rainy day. But regardless of the weather, we found the experience to be a great team-building event for our group, and knowing that the skills of our carpenters could help progress another building in the Hideaway was tremendously worthwhile to us. In addition, a GALLO designer was on hand to sketch areas and buildings within the Hideaway with plans to create a coloring book to give the children who come to visit.
